In 1953 Waiting for Godot opened to universal derision.  Today it is considered by some to be “the most significant English language play of the 20th century”.

What changed?  The play didn’t.  But the audience did.

Downstage Director Hilary Beaton addresses the current climate of New Zealand theatre-making and compares it to international p ractice and trends in the Downstage bar on Saturday 24 July at 6pm.
